Continuing on from the lesson on the Sticking Master System, next we are going to start combining two different sticking patterns together.
Let's start with Set 1, which uses sticking pattern 1 (R L L L) at the beginning of each bar combined with each of the 16 patterns from the master system in the second half of the bar.
We can continue this process for Set 2 which would be sticking pattern 2 (L R L L) with all 16 patterns and so on.
As an example, combination 2 and 5 would be: L R L L R R L L
Here is the play-along video for Sticking Combinations Set 1 (rights are coloured red to make it easier to follow the sticking).
Students can access the videos for Sets 2 through 16 by logging into the Student Portal and going to Online Resources.

Let's explore the 16 different sticking patterns created by the Master System.

You may notice some familiar patterns, such as single strokes, double strokes and paradiddles.

The next step is to move onto Sticking Combinations.
This is where we take each of the 16 sticking patterns from the master system and mix them together.
16th Note Accents
Sunday, March 24, 2019 by Chris McCaig | Technique
Accents are used to emphasise certain notes in a phrase.
This exercise is used to get you familiar with the 16 possible accent locations in the Master System.
You can find this exercise and more variations on page 21 of Basic Drum Kit Studies.
Practice each exercise with a metronome.
All non-accented notes are to be played as low as possible. All accented notes are to be played from a higher position, using the velocity of the stroke to create the accent.
Accents can also be played as rim shots by striking the snare rim (with the centre of the stick) and drum head (with the tip of the stick) at the same time.
