The beat is the regular pulse in music. You can feel the beat by tapping your foot along to a song.
You can measure the beat with a metronome - beats per minute (BPM).
In 4/4 time the beat is counted as quarters.
Quarters (one count per beat)
Beats can also be divided into smaller groups of two or more beats, called subdivisions.
The most common subdivisions are:
Eighths (two counts per beat)
Triplets (three counts per beat)
Sixteenths (four counts per beat)
