What To Practice
This is how I generally structure our lessons. It also happens to very effective as a practice routine.
Based on a 30 minute practice session:
1. Warm Up (5 min)
Stick Control or Rudiments, at a comfortable tempo.
2. Technical Work (10 min)
Work on your current projects: grooves, fills, reading and technique exercises.
3. Repertoire (15 min)
Grade songs and free choice songs.
How To Practice
★ Precision
Focus on playing each bar / section slowly and precisely.
★★ Endurance
Practice each bar / section over and over to develop muscle memory and build endurance.
★★★ Speed
Practice with a metronome for timing. Gradually increase the tempo until you reach your goal.
★★★★ Dynamics
Incorporate any written dynamic markings or apply your own.
★★★★★ Application
Bring it all together in a musical way on the drum set.
